Alex Lanier: How I became world badminton men's singles champion

The Normandy-born shuttler, still only 21, became France’s first world singles champion, underlining the rise in the sport back in his homeland.

One by one they fell by the wayside in the men’s singles at last month’s World Championships. Two of the top five seeds in the first round and another in the third round. All the while, ninth-seeded Alex Lanier kept to his ritual: eating chicken biryani and being a “hermit” in his room.

By the end of the event in New Delhi, the Normandy-born shuttler, still only 21, had become France’s first world singles champion, underlining the rise in the sport back in his homeland.

It was a mesmeric few hours for French badminton after Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue had also seen off China’s top seeds and world No.1 pair Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping for the first time.
