Badminton's scoring changes to 3x15: 'There has to be a balance between players and fans'

From players to fans, coaches to media, the scoring system change that is coming up in January has been discussed and debated. Not for the first time in the sport's history, badminton will witness another rule change.

At the 2026 BWF World Championships, or indeed around the badminton world, there was plenty of chatter about what's coming in 2027.

For their part, the BWF has been trying to underplay the magnitude of this change.

In the Official Report Paper that detailed the analysis done to implement the new system, the introductory wording seemed carefully chosen: "This is not a major change, but a measured shift that can provide meaningful benefits for players, fans, officials, and event organisers."
