A badminton enthusiast from the US has converted a used industrial robot arm into an automated training machine capable of repeatedly firing shuttlecocks across a court, allowing players to practise without a partner.

Travis Mitchell spent about six months developing the system around a Denso VS-050 six-axis robotic arm. The machine uses the arm to collect shuttlecocks from a magazine with a pneumatic grabber and feed them into two spinning wheels that launch them.

The launcher is powered by two 400-watt AC servo motors, while two pneumatic cylinders control the shuttlecock during the feeding process. The complete assembly is mounted on the robot's wrist.
